Funeral Food A Tory Bauer Mystery Book 1 eBook Kathleen Taylor

Delphi, South Dakota is a dusty little prairie town, the kind people drive through on their way to bigger cities. But as Tory Bauer, middle-aged, widowed, overweight, cranky waitress might say, “Everything that happens in big towns, happens here too. We just don’t look as good naked.”
In Funeral Food, the first of six mysteries featuring the crew at the Delphi Café, Tory would like nothing more than to get through the hot June days waiting tables, and her nights reading mysteries and thinking about the married Stu McKee. The last thing she wants is to be involved with a real-life mystery, but when a handsome young Mormon Missionary is found, dead, in the café’s mop closet, Tory is drawn into the investigation, and what she discovers shakes the foundations of her small town world.
Funeral Food A Tory Bauer Mystery Book 1 eBook Kathleen Taylor
Funeral Food is the first book in a six book series. I feel like I found a gem of a new series to read. The reason why are characters, the location and the humor. Tory Bauer is a waitress at the café in the small town. She is over 40, overweight and a recent widow. She lives with a co-worker and the co-worker son in a trailer at the edge of town. The POV is given by Tory. She is very witty. Before I mention the other characters, I want to write about Delphi South Dakota. Delphi is where the book takes place. It is a hot dusty town in the summer and the winters are harsh. It is a small town where each day goes by nearly the same as the day before. That changed when a body was found by Tory in the cafe's closet. Television trucks arrive in Delphi to report the news about the murder. The town was described so well that I could visualize the town and feel the heat. The town was almost a character in itself.
The residents of Delphi were quirky and unique. They would come into the café. All had weaknesses which were shown and made them more life like. The murder happened quite a way into the book. You can see it building towards the crime but the solution to the murder was not evident.
This series has been out of print but fortunately has been put in a kindle format. I liked it so much that I purchased book 2,3 and 4 after reading Funeral Food. If you like mysteries with humor, a great location and interesting characters, you should like this book.. I would like to make a correction. I just found out that in June 2016 the books have been re-issued in trade paperback form.

Funeral Food A Tory Bauer Mystery Book 1 eBook Kathleen Taylor Reviews
Re-reading Kathleen Taylor's Tony Bauer Mysteries - I enjoy them so much!
A fabulous read. Thoroughly enjoyed this story
As a South Dakota native, I can relate to the people, locations and South Dakota myths in the books. Great humor!
A fun, easy read. I'd read more by the author.
Though the setting is as alien to this East Coast gal as any fantasy, I soon felt right at home and became fond of the people in this town as they coped with situation they faced. I turned virtual pages at a pretty pace, was quite satisfied with the resolution, and look forward to enjoying more novels in the series.
Kathleen Taylor writes with great descriptive prose, both about setting and about the nature of the characters in her books. They seem alive to one by the time the story is over. Further, the ending cannot be predicted. After finding out 'whodunit,' one has to go back and re-read the book a couple of times to find foreshadowing that was there---but seemed only to be part of the setting and not standing out from the text. I love her books.
I bought this for my kindle because my old paperback's print is too small for me to read. I had already read this book but wanted to read it again. I don't identify with the setting or any of the characters yet they all seemed plausible to me. I wish she'd write more in this series. She is a much better writer than most of the new mystery writers. The kindle edition does need some proof reading though.
