Life is full of mystery. Is it possible that there is order in the midst of chaos?

Are there solutions to everyday problems? Can there be meaning or purpose in life? Is it possible to know why we are here and where we are going? Why is there so much suffering and death? Is there life after death? Can we be enlightened here and now? Am I destined to lose all identity—to become part of a great nothingness? Is it true that there are no answers?

There is an ancient book that discusses the many questions in life. It is called, “The Holy Bible.” But are the answers found within its pages trustworthy? To decide for yourself, you need to know what it really says.

By this Name peels the religion off this sacred book and lets the ancient story speak for itself. In the process, a message of hope snaps into focus. It is a must read.

“I understood things I never understood before. It was like a puzzle coming together. It made sense.”

John R. Cross writes from knowledge gained in a life-long study of the Bible. He has extensive experience traveling and living abroad. John and his family are from Canada.

I have read 'Stranger on the Road to Emmaus', and 'The Lamb', which are also by this author and publishing company. Each of these books focuses on a slightly different audience. However, I have found them all beneficial. The Lamb is geared towards children and Stranger is geared towards adults with no biblical foundation and goes from creation to the Cross and beyond. I'm having a hard time telling exactly what makes these books different from one another, but I have learned new things from each of them. They break the message of the Holy Bible down 'Barney style' so that the confusion that abounds about Christianity is removed. Now, whether a person responds is up to the Holy Spirit and that individual.

So, having been a long time believer and attender of church, Sunday schools, vacation bible schools, Christian schools, and all that kind of stuff, I have found this book to be awesome in putting it all together so that the Bible just makes sense. I had an extremely shallow understanding of most of the Bible even though I had been around it and sort of read it for years and years. I had lots of knowledge, but was unable to connect the dots. This books takes people through how God has been at work in every Bible account and in every person or people group's life from beginning to end. It makes it very clear that people make the choice to trust God or to trust themselves and the natural consequences of the choice they make. It shows how God promised to send a Deliverer and goes step by step through prophecy and the fulfillment of those prophecies through Jesus. This book does a fantastic job of bringing together the Old and New Testaments. A lot of people only want to focus on Jesus and the New Testament, but neglecting the origins of God's redemptive plan (ie. the Old Testament) is a serious error and will leave crucial gaps in understanding the Good News. You have to know the bad news first. It also clears up confusion in regards to certain aspects of how God handled ancient culture and the like, that seem strange and barbaric to our 'modern' minds.

This book answers a lot of questions like, 'Why did God do that? 'Why did things happen that way?' 'What's this sin stuff?' Why the sacrifices and all this blood business?' People aren't as smart as we think we are and God obviously knows that, so He took the time to show us how trustworthy, faithful, and reliable He is to keep His promises.

So, for someone who knows little about the Bible, this is a fantastic book to take you through it from beginning to end in a fashion that will remove any confusion over the main concepts. For a believer, this is kind of an Apologetics 101: Know what you believe and why and how to share it with others in a way that makes sense. It will build your faith and your love for God will grow tremendously when you see how much He loves and cares for us. Too many believers remain stagnant in their relationship with God and their knowledge of His Word and this book can help people get interested in reading and studying the Bible. We're commanded to always be ready (1 Peter 3:15-16) and to contend for the faith (Jude 3). This book is a fantastic tool to sort of begin at the beginning and make sure you understand what you are supposed to be telling others.

This book was given to me by the daughter of the author. I liked it so much that I ordered more copies for friends and relatives.
Excellent book for a new or old Christian, meaning from the spiritual aspect. Recommended for all readers of a "wanting to know attitude".
This is so relevant and so interesting to read! I bought several copies to share with others. It's a great book to go through as a group, sharing thoughts with one another.
I am a long time follower of the bible and approached this with some skepticism. I found it pretty accurate and understandable for the newbie or seasoned reader with valuable insights that helped me discern the bibles great depths. I will gladly recommend it to any who are hungering for the needed truth found in Gods word. It's like sharing a loaf of your favorite bread with a friend. Yum!
This book is powerfully written telling the stories of scripture in a unique and creative way. It chronicles the timeless stories of the Bible with a narrative that is both personal and convincing. Like it's title, it's intriguing in its format, matching scientific facts, archaeological findings alongside scriptures that reveal truth with up-to-date facts and contemporary figures. This is one of the most unique commentaries of the bible for those who want to know truth and are looking for the answers to life. Fascinating, compelling and accurate.
Excellent read thru man's history with God and God's expression of love over the ages. This book makes it clearer why I believe Jesus is the Son of God, is God and thru Him my eternal life is assured in heaven. This book also showed me why it is so easy to sin, to forget my position with God and my desires to pursue selfish, but so temporary gratification. Without hesitation I'd recommend this book to everyone, including those who call themselves a Christian. "By This Name" has helped me clarify my journey and relationship with God. ...johnf
"By This Name" is a succinct and well written explanation of what it means to be a Christian. Mr. Cross explains the substance and context of the Bible in language easy to understand. As a cultural Christian who is very familiar with Biblical teachings I felt comfortable that I knew it all. Not so. In this book I found answers to questions I asked more than 40 years ago.
I recommend this book seeking a deeper understanding of the Christian faith. Alternatively, if you are a skeptic, read it anyway and learn what it is you are rejecting.
Many people, including myself, learn about God's work in history in disjointed pieces a Bible story here and there, or an occasional media piece we read somewhere. As a result, we often see a lot of details, but we don't understand how they relate to the whole. This book presents a high-level, chronological overview of God's work in history as presented in the Bible -- and, as a result, many of the details we know, now make sense. // IMO, this is an excellent book for those who "grew up in the church" as well as for anyone interested in what Judaism and Christianity are about.
